Food Photographer Johannesburg

I had so much fun photographing this vibrant, detail-rich book. Filled with colour, character, and charm, it was a truly special project to capture.

The book was photographed in Cullinan at author Willie Straus’s home, lovingly known as the Sinkhuis. Every prop featured in the book came from his house and shop, adding an authentic and beautifully personal touch to every image.

With five dogs, five cats, two swans, geese, and chickens keeping us company throughout the shoot, the Sinkhuis brought its own magic and atmosphere to the experience. It is truly a book within a book — a celebration not only of the recipes, but of the extraordinary world in which it was created.

The most recent cookbook I photographed for Penguin Random House was a truly special project. The food was absolutely exceptional, and Naquiah and her family made me feel completely at home in their house throughout the shoot. The photography and styling embraced clean, neutral tones, allowing the dishes to shine naturally. I also had the opportunity to play with beautiful natural dappled light, which added warmth, depth, and a soft, organic feel to the final images.

Shooting 'Our Italian Legacy of Love' was truly a beautiful family experience. Filled with warmth, heritage, and heartfelt moments, this book was a joy to photograph. It was especially rewarding to see it receive international recognition when it won a World Gourmand Cookbook Award in 2021 — a wonderful celebration of a story told through food, family, and love.

I had the most amazing time shooting this life tribute book with my friend Dorah Sitole. We started shooting beginning of 2020 and then covid and the lockdown hit. We had to postpone shooting until we were allowed again. The book was out on the shelves end of November. Tragically Dorah passed away in January 2021. This book is truly a tribute to her life and the amazing person and life changer she was.

"40 Years of Iconic Food is the product of Dorah Sitole's culinary journey, which has taken her from a hungry early childhood in the townships to kitchens and cuisines across Africa and beyond.Through Dorah's remarkable career in food she has become a South African icon, and is today a beloved household name. The chapters in this book map out the stages of her fascinating life, and feature recipes to match: traditional African, township flavours, familiar favourites, pan-African and global gourmet. Let Dorah be your companion in the kitchen, lift your spirits, challenge you a bit or just simply make you smile!" --

Author Estelle Sacharowitz reveals that she thinks about food all the time. ‘And as I wonder what it’s all about, and why I do what I do, I realise that it’s all about us. It’s about you, it’s about me, it’s about people. It’s about our complexities, memories and sweetness. It’s about trying to capture time in a form that is familiar, comforting and definite … It’s about creativity and curiosity. It’s about needs, primal and necessary, and also emotional.’

And as a magician waving a wand, Estelle distils this into an array of dishes that feed both body and soul in the most delightful and tempting manner. From humble but comforting soups, through nourishing bowls and elegant meals to impress, to bountiful platters, you won’t be able to resist. Simply submit and enjoy. And as Estelle says, ‘Make and eat something that causes you to stop and think, this is wonderful. Life is full of wonder.’
